THE HIGH PRICE OF OIL AND GAS PUTTING A STRAIN ON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN NIGERIA
The recent surge in oil and gas products prices has significantly impacted negatively on the social, economic and financial status of universities students in Nigeria. The near unbearable cost increase on major needs such as; transportation, foods, and housing, has made it difficult for many students to make ends meet. This high price stretch, have generally resulted in reduced spending power command to forcing students to prioritize on essential expenses over the discretionary ones.
Infact, this has led to a decline or shrink in the overall standard of living.
The situation is further complicated by the limited financial resources available to students, making it challenging for them to cope with the rising cost. As a result, the academic performance and overall well-being are negatively affected.
High price of oil and gas and their allied products, are having a record devastated impulse on university students in Nigeria presently to an extent of demanding urgent actions from all concerned governments at all levels, Federal, State, Privates including University Management, to address the situation.
The tolling ripple effect of this price hike has brought about huge socio - economic stress on Nigerian Students at all levels without recourse such to an extent of, some students naturally dropping-off school in their course of studies due to inability to cope financially; increase in poor performance due to skipping classes attendance; strain relationship between students and university community; constant harassment and transfer aggression between students and host community; public psychological withdrawal and severe social decline with induced slight depressions on students; health uprightness and possible strikes in crimes among the greed and weaklings etc, to mention few.
From the above, it is quite essential that, government at present need to look inward and stem the tide of this price hike from exhaustible elastic limit by providing enabling economic environment to cushion the effect on affordable prices that will guarantee humanly purchasing power for all students at the daily needs of their academic pursuant.
