FUEL PRICE HIKES IMPACTING NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The recent unsteady price hike on fuel products across the country has made it difficult for students to commute freely at various Nigerian University campuses, and by extension making it challenging to attend exams and classes regularly. The tolling effect on transportation costs have increased significantly, making it hard for students to afford the journey to school expectedly daily to receive lectures or on other related activities.

This hike in price has further compounded the situation, which has affected the university's ability to provide and as well maintain needed regular essential services like power generation, water supply and full use of school utilities.

Nigerian Academic Community (NAC) are calling on the government to wade in and take immediate actions in addressing this untoward hardship and situation. Infact, some are advocating for reinstatement of fuel subsidies, that was removed last year without proper substitute in place on how to ensure that this present quagmire never came to be. With this cut-throat high price of fuel, the future looks uncertain as education sector continue to feel the resultant effect as another major challenge in addition to all other unresolved existing predicaments.

In conclusion, the fuel price crisis has had a devastating impacts more on students and university communities generally by affecting every aspect of academic life. From increased transportation costs to escalating prices of goods and services, the situation is undoubtedly becoming unsustainable for an average number of students.
Therefore, government in its wisdom and affection for students should step in and endeavour to take urgent measure either to reinstating fuel subsidies earlier removed or finding alternative consideration to cushion the effect on affordable price to all, because, the future of education in Nigeria largely depends on it.
