FROM ANONYMITY TO ACCLAIM: The Surging Of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu



President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was born 29 March, 1952 in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. His father was a civil servant while his mother was a homemaker. As a child, he attended local schools, where he was known for his intelligence and love of reading. Also, he was active in the Boy Scouts and other youth organizations.He attended the University of Chicago, where he studied and graduated with honours in 1979 and earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (Accounting and Management). While there, he became active in student politics, and was a key figure in the movement against military rule in Nigeria by becoming deeply involved in organizing several and civil protests against the detested draconian rule by the military.

After graduating from the university, he worked while in Chicago at several places including; Deloitte Haskins, General Motors, First National Bank of Chicago, Procter and Gamble, Mobil Producing Nigeria etc where he broadened his experience in auditing and management consultancy services.
He rose through the ranks, and became known as a savvy and effective officer. However, he was soon fired from his job because of his outspoken criticism of the military regime. 

Bola Ahmed Tinubu's political journey began in the late 80's when he mobilized the people of Lagos against the military dictatorship that ruled Nigeria then. He was first into politics in 1992 as founding member of Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was elected a senator representing Lagos West.This marked the start of his successful career in politics. Though the annulment of third republic in 1993 fired a new salvo in him to become a founding member of National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that were against military junta and their reigns in Nigeria.He was a key figure in the pre- democracy movement which led to end of military rule.

A useful and veritable instrument to the formations of several political parties in the country, such as, Alliance for Democracy (AD) Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). This culminated in his election as governor of Lagos State in 1999 for two terms tenure till 2007. During his tenure, Lagos state witnessed rapid economic growth, improved IGR adjudged the highest and convincing structural development. 
He played a pivotal role in uniting various factions within the party, he was able to bring together different groups with different agenda and priorities.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu's influence and acumen helped the party, All Progressive Congress (APC) gain national prominence, culminating in its victory in 2015 general and presidential elections. His ability to build bridges and find common ground was critical to the party's success in winning the presidency.
In 2022, Tinubu GCFR, himself, through party primaries and national convention of his party, APC, was elected presidential candidate to contest 2023 general elections, which he won with landslide to become the 16th and current President of Federal Republic of Nigeria. Becoming by record, the first former Governor of Lagos state to hold the office, a testament to his dedication and determination.

Tinubu's legacy is one of commitments to democracy, economic development, and the welfare of the Nigerian people. His work to build a strong, prosperous, and democratic Nigeria will be remembered for generations to come.
